Chandler Mansion’s Future Unknown
The fate of this 10 acre estate which includes a 1.5 acre lake with dock, boat house, guest house, gardener’s house and butlers home above the garage will be decided sometime next month. The property was previously owned by an internet porn magnet, then an oral surgeon. The current owners of the 13,000 square foot mansion are trying to convert it into a bed and breakfast and wedding reception venue. Neighbours close to the property are against the conversion into a commercial property and claim it will bring property values down as well as increasing noise & traffic. There was a hearing tonight at 5:30 pm before the Chandler Planning and Zoning Commission where both sides could voice their concerns. Several neighbours showed up wearing t-shirts saying “Not in our backyard!” ”This is strictly a residential area, it’s been residential for decades… what they’re talking about doing is a purely commercial use,” says neighbour Tom Axelsen. ”This is going to be permitted from 8 a.m. to midnight seven days a week. Commercial use, parties, loud noise. It just doesn’t fit in a residential neighbourhood,” says Axelsen. The planning commission will make a recommendation to the city council, which will make a final decision sometime next month.
Below is an aerial view of the estate showing the proximately of the neighbours. As you can see there are only two properties directly connected on the Northern & Western sides. The Eastern side of the estate borders N Kyrene Road with several homes across the street.
